We're so proud!! Jude ate his official first "real food" meal tonight!!! Well, baby food ofcourse! :-) He finished a whole tiny orange jar of squash!! :-) He was so ca-ute!!! He couldn't quite figure out what the spoon was all about with it's repeated entering and leaving his mouth, haha. He sucked on the spoon for a while too but did finally get the hang of it and started just sucking the food off of the spoon and even grabbed at it like "just let me do it" - haha.
He'd start to cry when I went to dip for more and then make a thankful noise when the spoon re-entered with a heaping of tasty squashy goodness. It was so great!
I can't wait to do it again tomorrow night! :-D Stand by for more on whether it helped w/him sleeping thru an entire night...I mean, LOOK at that full belly!!! Hey, a mom can dream, right?! ;-)
I always dreamed solids would help my girls sleep through the night. I hope it helped you!
ReplyDeleteSo is your sweet boy not sleeping through the night? How often (and when) does he wake up??
ReplyDeleteAnd did you do any rice cereal or oatmeal... or go straight for squash?
Or doctor recommended no fruits or veggies until six months, but said we could do rice cereal. However, I'm in no big hurry... I guess I want him to stay a baby as long as possible!! :-)
Brie ~ GIRL! I'm still dreaming of that day as well, LOL.
ReplyDeleteJocelyn ~ nope! :-) He has good nights for sure where he'll make it 6 hours but then he also still has the occasional pretty bad night where he'll wake up starving every 2 hours! Not sure what gives...LOL. The pediatrician says it's all totally normal and he's just going thru growth spurts.
A pretty standard night is...6-8 ounces at around 7:30, bedtime at 8:00, wakes up around midnight - 1:00am and wants about 4 oz and goes straight back to sleep, wakes up again anywhere from 4-5:30am and then we either get ready for work/daycare on a week day or put him back down for another 3-4 hours on a weekend day.
The good news is that Jon and I seem fine with the sleep loss these days and have amazingly been feeling pretty rested even lately...we take turns and only have to wake up once a night each. It’s truly amazing how your body adapts! :-) This past week was an exception - Jon and Jude were both sick :-( which didn’t help things with trying to set a routine, etc… Jude would THINK he was hungry, take a bottle then throw it all back up every time! Broke my heart!! Poor baby…or should I say babies (Jon was the same way). I thankfully made it thru without catching the bug or we would have had a time for sure!! I was zombie-fied! LOL
We did try the rice and oatmeal cereals and still incorporate it into his diet some (when he’ll take it) but he isn't a huge fan and usually offers it right back to us via spitting it up w/a frown! HaHa. We started trying different things (cereal) about 2 weeks ago when he was doing the every 2 hour wake-ups all of a sudden and would cry like he was dying of starvation! It was nuts!! We thought...we gotta give this kid something w/more substance and the pediatrician agreed that was fine.
So... he had his 4 mos appt last Friday and Dr. Martin (pediatrician) said it was "go time" for veggies. As chubby as he looks to us, he is apparently still somewhat small (13 lbs 14 ounces) so that concerns me ofcourse. :-( He’s in the 9th percentile! Isn’t that crazy?! I mean, I guess Jon and I are both pretty lean but still…he looks like a chunk to me…and others comment the same…
Jude LOVED the squash! We couldn’t put another bite in his mouth fast enough! At first he sucked on the spoon thinking it was a bottle with a puzzled look trying to figure it all out but once he got the hang of it he grabbed for the spoon and literally tried to feed himself. Jon and I were cracking up!! Praying this is a break thru atleast for a little weight gain/growth! I can handle the sleep patterns he’s got going on… ya know?
All in all, things are wonderful ~ he has a sweet little fun personality and is a super happy baby…I’ve just got to accept the fact that he’s not a sleeper yet ;-) In his defense, neither was I.
I am surprised by the 9th percentile thing... he definitely looks bigger in pictures, and not too much different from Eli, who is 16 lbs. and 75th percentile. And 6-8 oz. is impressive... Eli usually takes a 6 oz. bottle at the beginning and end of every day, but his daytime bottles are 5 oz. (and sometimes he'll only drink 3 oz. at a time and then come back an hour later to finish the other 2 oz.). I get very concerned that he's not eating enough (sometimes only 27 oz. in a day), but I also figure that if he was hungry, he would let me know.
ReplyDeleteAnd the sleeping thing... that sucks! I really hope, for your sake and Jon's sake, that he starts waking up less and less during the night. Just curious: is he strictly on formula now? Or are you nursing (I can't remember)? How many ounces does he drink during the day? And how often does he drink during the day?
Right?! ME TOO!
ReplyDeleteYeah, there for a short while Jude was drinking a solid 8 0z every 4 hours! Then he went back to fairly similar to Eli sounds like...we'd make a 6 oz bottle but he'd finish maybe 3 oz then spit the bottle out and come back wanting close to the remainder a couple hours later.
On average Jude eats right at the same, 28-30 ounces a day and incorporating the "real food" hasn't change that but ofcourse, it's only been 2 days. He eats pretty much on target every 4 hours.
I stopped breast feeding when he was 6 weeks old. I just wasn't producing...some of the same issues you had. We visited with Baylor's lactation specialist a couple times and shortly after were supported in going to a strictly formula diet. ALL were much happier w/that decision! :-)
I'm the same way! I worry alot but the pediatrician, other moms (like you :-))and my own mom and sister give great encouragement and reassurance that he's just fine. He constantly shows us he's happy and he may just be behind in weight being born so small??
He's doing great in other areas! He can sit with Bumbo's help great, he grasps toys, can push up on his tummy mat great, he's smiling tons and has started with the giggle, great eye contact and focus... I just need to concentrate on the positives and ofcourse, keep an eye on the rest and keep the faith! :-)
